Black-Owned Clothing Store in DeSoto Builds on Christian Man’s Faith After First Business “Breaks Me Down”

After years of figuring out how to make his t-shirt business a reality, Taofik Olatunji decided in April 2019 that he would go ahead and not turn around.

He launched Designer Christian Apparel, a line of t-shirts with Bible scriptures and inspirational messages.

“This product will bring more than financial gain,” said Olatunji. “It will also spread the word of God to others. “

The clothing store is located at Grow DeSoto Market Place, a small business incubator where owners can establish themselves before moving to a larger space.

The Olatunji store is the realization of a 15-year dream in the making.

“In 2004, I considered making T-shirts with slogans from different artists and rappers over time with my favorite lyrics on them, but that never ended up happening,” he said. “It broke my morale, but I’ve always wanted to find a way to make money, so what better way to do it and spread the gospel? “

In 2012, Olatunji created shirts for President Barack Obama’s re-election, but demand declined and he lost money. This time around he said he didn’t want to build a brand and not be able to push on with effort.

The store sells not only clothing, but also handmade jewelry such as bracelets and necklaces made of 14k gold and sterling silver with natural gemstones and black diamonds.

Olatunji also does custom screen printing and embroidery for many items.

Designer Christian Clothing is located at 324 E. Belt Line Road, Suite 604, DeSoto.

The Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich sold at 2 Neighbors Hot Chicken is their best-seller, according to owner Carlonda Marshall.
