Beatriz Bustamante provided the City of Avon with an affidavit on Thursday withdrawing her candidacy to replace Avon Mayor Sarah Smith Hymes in the November recall vote. Bustamante was the only candidate to have filed a motion to appear in the event that Smith Hymes was recalled.

According to an email from Bustamante to the city regarding her withdrawal, she did so because her goal “is to be a public servant and to raise awareness and bring a different perspective to the issues that the city of Avon is facing.” confronted. I prefer to be elected in a traditional election and will consider running next year. “

Avon City Council member Tamra Underwood is also subject to a recall vote in the November election. However, no candidate has filed a petition to come forward in the event Underwood is recalled.

With Bustamante’s withdrawal, if Smith Hymes or Underwood were recalled in the November election, their seat or seats would become vacant. The Council would then be required to appoint a person to the vacant position (s) within 75 days of the certification of the election results.

In the November ballot, voters can expect to see questions about whether to recall Smith Hymes and Underwood. These questions will be accompanied by a 200-word summary from the Avon callback committee with the entity’s reasoning for wanting to call the two board members back. Each question will also include a 300-word summary for both board members, along with their rationale as to why they should remain in office.

Following previous reports from the Vail Daily on these justifications and the recall ballot questions, Smith Hymes sent an email Wednesday evening in an attempt to clarify certain terms in his statement. The previous article reported that his statement said that “voting for removal would send a message to future candidates that you will not tolerate frivolous removal efforts to overturn regular election results and remove voting rights.”

In his email, Smith Hymes wrote: “My intention was to say that reminders like this deter people from running in local elections. Serving in the public service has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life despite this painful chapter, and I fear this reminder will put many people off who might consider serving.
