Home Office Denied Missionaries of Charity FCRA Renewal Application

The registration of the Missionaries of Charity with the FCRA was valid until October 31, 2021.

The registration of the Missionaries of Charity with the FCRA was valid until October 31, 2021.

The Department of the Interior said on Monday that the Missionaries of Charity’s application for renewal of Foreign Contributions (Regulation) Act (FCRA) registration was denied on Dec. 25 for not meeting the conditions of eligibility, as some unfavorable contributions had been received.

In a statement, the MHA also said that it had not frozen any accounts of the Missionaries of Charity, but the State Bank of India informed that the organization itself had sent a request to the bank to freeze its accounts. .

The MHA statement came hours after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that the Center had frozen all bank accounts of the organization founded by Mother Teresa.

“Shocked to learn that over Christmas, Union Ministry has FROZEN ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa in India! Their 22,000 patients and staff were left without food or medicine. While the law is paramount, humanitarian efforts must not be compromised,” Ms Banerjee tweeted.

The MHA said the MoC’s FCRA registration renewal application was denied on December 25 for not meeting the eligibility requirements under the 2010 FCRA and 2011 Foreign Contribution Regulation Rules (FCRR).

“No request or request for review has been received from the Missionaries of Charity for the review of this refusal to renew,” the statement said.

The registration of the Missionaries of Charity with the FCRA was valid until October 31, 2021.

The MHA said the validity was later extended to December 31, 2021 along with other FCRA associations whose application for renewal was pending renewal.

“However, during the review of the MoC renewal application, some negative contributions were noticed. Given these contributions to the record, the MoC renewal application was not approved,” the statement read.

The MoC’s FCRA registration was valid until December 31, 2021, and the MHA did not freeze any MoC accounts.

“The State Bank of India has informed that the MoC itself has sent a request to the SBI to freeze its accounts,” the statement said.

The Missionaries of Charity is a Catholic religious congregation founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa.
