Malaysia set to accept online applications for recruitment of foreign workers

Malaysia has decided to open the online application for the recruitment of foreign workers in the plantation sector with a special waiver from January 28, according to Malaysian Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M Saravanan.

On the other hand, the application for other sectors, including the plantation sector, without special dispensation, will open from February 15, Bernama reports.

Applications will be accepted through the official government website

The government had granted special permission to bring in 32,000 foreign workers through a special exemption last September to alleviate labor shortages in the plantation sector.

During the Council of Ministers last December, it was agreed that the recruitment of foreign workers would be open to all sectors other than the plantation sector. The authorized sectors are agriculture, manufacturing, services, mining and quarrying, construction and domestic help.

Meanwhile, Saravanan reminded employers to follow the standard operating procedure (SOP) for admitting foreign workers established by the government.

He said the SOP covered four phases, namely pre-release, on arrival, post arrival (quarantine) and post-quarantine.

“All foreign workers are required to undergo a seven-day quarantine during which they will be screened twice for Covid-19 and the cost will be borne by the employer,” he added.

He said that currently all quarantine centers, as well as hotels for quarantine purposes, are in the Klang Valley and they can accommodate 10,000 people at a time.

In this regard, he said, the ministry welcomed willing parties to offer facilities to be used as quarantine centres.
