Scout, a boutique of “fine clothes” and gifts, opened its first storefront in St. Paul in August 2018. Now it is adding a second location to its arsenal in Edina. The new boutique, located at 3927 Market Street, will open on April 5.
The store experienced a business boom in 2020, fueled by the community’s efforts to buy locally, said Scout owner Ben Thompson, who runs the business with her husband John Thompson. The store’s primary location in St. Paul’s West’s 7th Ward gained notoriety over the past year, with businesses like Hope Breakfast Bar across from Scout sparking interest in the area.
“People are just focusing on supporting small local businesses right now,” says Thompson.
Unlike its location in St. Paul, inside a historic building, the second Scout store is located in a new development called Nolan Mains. Thompson plans to use vintage light fixtures and warm wood tones to make the space less industrial and closer to Scout’s first location.
But when it comes to the products and the feel, buyers can expect the same.
“We will try to keep it as similar as possible. I think the only thing we could do is bring in slightly more expensive products, ”says Thompson.
Scout presented itself as a more “accessible” clothing brand with lower prices than other local shops, as well as a fun and friendly atmosphere.
“We try not to label our store as a men’s store. We want to be open to all genders. Obviously we have a masculine style because that’s what we know and are familiar with, ”says Thompson. “But we belong to gay people and want to be inclusive for everyone.”
Edina’s Scout site will continue to offer clothing, household items and gifts. They specialize in casual and outdoor brands that focus on eco-friendly materials and business practices. The new window will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Paul Apparel Store Scout opens a second store in Edina
